Why Choose Sit-and-Train?
There is nothing quite like bonding with your dog as you learn and grow together. But there are times when an extended stay with a positive reinforcement trainer can be beneficial. A sit-and-train program is an effective way to teach your dog new skills or improve existing behavior in a focused environment.
During this time, positive reinforcement training methods are used to work on basic skills and manners, or problem behaviors like excessive barking or leash pulling. This approach can also help dogs learn without distractions commonly found at home. Daily training sessions are tailored to your dog’s needs and provide focused one-on-one learning. At the end of your dog’s stay, you’ll receive guidance and coaching to maintain your dog’s progress and smoothly transition back into your own daily routine.
Sit-and-train is perfect for busy dog parents needing extra support. It offers a structured and individualized way to onboard basic skills to set you up for success at home.
Why is Bean’s Best Care Different?
Traditional “board-and-train” facilities and programs are built on the premise that learning is a short-duration experience for your dog (days to weeks), when in reality learning is a life-long process and happens in context. What this means is that even a 6-week training class only builds foundational skills/knowledge. And, what your dog learns in one environment doesn’t automatically transfer to other environments.
These facilities also typically use aversive training techniques including physical punishment, corrections, shock collars, prong collars, and other ways to essentially bully your dog into being “trained”. Many people who send their dogs to board-and-train facilities are returned a dog that is traumatized, fearful, and never the same. (For a more in-depth understanding of the pros and cons of this type of service check out this blog post by the amazing Dr. Patricia McConnell!).
When you board with me your dog will be staying in my home and will be the only dog. This means they receive personalized and individual care and training. Instead of a busy facility, your dog stays in a real home environment, with a dedicated trainer and caregiver who provides customized services. They receive positive reinforcement training in addition to plenty of daily exercise and enrichment. You can expect regular updates and photos to give you piece of mind while you’re apart from your dog.
My goal is not to train your dog for you but to give you the support you need for your own training. We will work together to identify your training goals and set both you and your dog up for success!
Phone Consultation + Meet and Greet
To assess if the training relationship will be a good fit, I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation. During this call we will discuss your goals and intentions for training and schedule a free in-person meet and greet (required).
Full Consultation
To begin the training process, we’ll schedule a 60 minute consultation (done virtually or in-person). No training occurs during this consultation. From this we will set up a training plan to meet your goals and needs.
Because there will be a lag in your relationship-building with your dog, a post-training consultation is also required. This will be 60 minutes in-person, and we will discuss what your dog learned and what you need to move forward with as the pet parent (spoiler alert: it’s more training!).
